Patent Reg. No. 26820 · Registered January 17, 2001 · Tehran
A method of applying watercolor to stone, creating colors that are fixed, washable and resistant to indirect heat.
Dr. Saeed Naderian is a chemist, painter and inventor working in Tehran, Iran. He invented and patented a way of painting watercolor directly onto natural stone so that the color becomes permanent: the finished piece can be rinsed under running water and hung above a lit fireplace. The method is registered as patent no. 26820 and has been recognised in Budapest, Seoul and Tehran.
The method
“You may not believe it. You may think it is not possible, but you can test it.”
The first proof is water. A finished stone can be rinsed and washed, or wiped clean with a soft damp cloth, without the painting lifting or fading. The second proof is heat. The work resists indirect heat — the heat of a gas fire, until the stone is too hot to touch — which is why a panel can be mounted directly above a hearth.
Each painting is a single stone, cut by hand to its own shape and standing upright on its edge. Because the surface is stone rather than paper, the work can live where a watercolor never could: over a fireplace, in a kitchen, in a bathroom, on a garden wall.
